Ergonomic Principles

Physiotherapy in North York for Work Activities

Ergonomics means designing work so it fits the person, helping prevent injury and improve comfort and performance. To achieve good ergonomics, both task-related and individual risk factors need to be identified and reduced.

Common ergonomic risks in a job include awkward or static postures, prolonged sitting or standing, repetitive movements, excessive force, contact stress, vibration, and challenging environments such as heat, cold, loud noise, or poor lighting. Awkward postures place joints away from their mid-range, making muscles work harder and increasing strain, while long-held positions and repetitive movements fatigue muscles and tendons and can lead to overuse injuries.

Environment, contact stress, and vibration

Leaning or kneeling on hard surfaces, or resting wrists on sharp edges, creates contact stress that can irritate soft tissues, especially when combined with poor posture. Heat, cold, noise, and low visibility can speed up fatigue, reduce coordination, and encourage awkward positions, while whole-body or hand–arm vibration from vehicles or power tools reduces blood flow and accelerates muscle fatigue.

Reducing task risks (controls)

Ergonomic controls follow a hierarchy: first try to remove the task or high‑risk step entirely, then substitute safer methods or equipment, such as using carts instead of manual carrying. Tasks can be modified by changing tools, adjusting heights, rotating duties, shortening exposure time, and mixing static work with movement; personal protective equipment like gloves or knee pads is a last layer of protection.

Individual risk factors

Personal factors include long‑standing postural habits, reduced joint range of motion from previous injury or degeneration, low cardiovascular fitness, limited strength, and permanent physical disabilities that alter how someone moves or senses their environment. These issues can increase load on joints and soft tissues, raise fatigue, and make even well-designed tasks harder to perform safely.

How North York Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic can help

Maintaining overall health, strength, and posture is key; assessments such as a Functional Abilities Evaluation (FAE) can compare job demands with a person’s current capacity. Innova Physio & Sports Rehab can analyze your work postures and movements, assess your body’s abilities, suggest workstation or task changes, and design targeted exercise and stretching programs to improve tolerance and support recovery from work-related strain.
